North Carolina's coasts were a very popular hideout for pirates. The coast line of North Carolina provided shallow shores and many inlets for pirates to safely anchor down and plot their next big steal. The rough shores made harboring for trade challenging, but the pirates took the challenge to their advantage for safety. "The general area near the mouth of the Cape Fear River had become something of a favorite rendezvous for pirates. The complicated terrain and wandering waterways offered concealment from prying eyes." (Rankin, 1981) The North Carolina coasts prove to be a tricky terrain, but provided a great hideout and safe haven for pirates.
Not only did the terrain of the North Carolina coasts provide an ideal location for pirates, but the favorable relationship with Governor Charles Eden made North Carolina a good location for pirates to take anchor. The Pirate Stede Bonnet, The Gentleman Pirate, made attempt to flee to North Carolina for safety when he was captured and imprisoned in South Carolina. The Pirate Blackbeard also had a very close relationship with Eden and was said to had been married by him to his latest wife. It would be hard to steer pirates away with a pirate-friendly Governor and a pirate ship-friendly coastal terrain.
